Overview An Autobody Technician (also called a Collision Repair Technician) is responsible for repairing and restoring damaged vehicles to their original condition after accidents, weather damage, or general wear. This includes structural repairs, bodywork, refinishing, and ensuring vehicles meet safety and quality standards. Key Responsibilities Inspect damaged vehicles and assess repair needs Perform body repairs such as dent removal, panel replacement, and frame straightening Use tools and equipment like welders, grinders, and hydraulic systems Repair or replace damaged parts (doors, fenders, bumpers, etc.) Prepare surfaces for painting (sanding, filling, priming) Match and apply paint finishes to restore appearance Ensure all repairs meet manufacturer and safety standards Maintain a clean and organized workspace Document repairs and communicate with estimators or supervisors Required Skills & Qualifications Knowledge of automotive body repair techniques and tools Ability to read repair estimates and technical manuals Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship Physical strength and stamina (lifting, standing, bending) Problem-solving skills Basic math and measuring skills High school diploma or equivalent (required) Vocational training or certification in auto body repair (preferred) Certifications (Preferred) I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair) certification ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in collision repair Work Environment Repair shops, collision centers, or dealerships Exposure to noise, chemicals, and dust Requires use of protective equipment (gloves, masks, safety glasses) Salary (Typical U.S. Range) Entry-level: $35,000–$45,000/year Experienced: $50,000–$75,000+/year Highly skilled technicians may earn more with commissions or flat-rate pay Career Growth Senior/Lead Technician Shop Foreman or Manager Estimator or Appraiser Specialized roles (paint specialist, frame technician)
